vegetation starting to grow in the foreground valley. |

In this
close-up of the crater in May of 2006 you can see the newest
part of the dome forming. The formation on the top was
known as "The Shark Fin". |

This ridge is north of the
mountain and east of the Johnston Ridge Center. One the
volcano side the trees are flattened. On the sheltered
side of the ridge the trees are still standing but were killed
by the heat and gases of pyroclastic flow. |

If you
zoom in on the large version of this picture of the west slope
of Mount Saint Helens you can see what looks like very small
trees trying to get a start. |

Late in May we started our
quest to visit as many Hot Springs as we can find. This
stream is on the trail to Bagby Hot Springs in Oregon.

The Bagby
Hot Springs are to the southwest of Mount Hood which happens to
be yet another volcano. |
